Captiva Island is one of those places that just feels different the second you get out on the water. Early mornings out here are hard to beat — calm water, the sun coming up over the flats, and usually a few fish already moving around before most people have finished their coffee.
But it’s not just a pretty place to fish. Captiva Island fishing charters can be incredibly productive, and it’s one of my favorite areas to guide because there’s so much variety packed into a small stretch of water.
Within a short boat ride you’ve got grass flats, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, tidal passes, and even nearshore structure. That means on any given trip we can chase a few different species without running far. Some days we’re working shallow water for snook, other days we might slide offshore a bit and look for cobia or tripletail.
That variety keeps things fun.

Snook Fishing Around Captiva
Snook fishing around Captiva is about as good as it gets in Southwest Florida.
During the warmer months these fish stack up along the beaches and passes while they get ready to spawn. When the tide is moving and the bait is around, the bite can be absolutely on fire. We’ll fish live baits in the current and wait for that unmistakable thump.
Other days we’re sneaking into the backwater creeks or working sandbars looking for cruising fish. Snook are aggressive, and when they eat, you’ll know it. Big hits, fast runs, and a fight that’ll put your drag to work.
Fishing For Redfish On The Flats
Redfish are another big part of what makes Captiva Island fishing charters so much fun.
Fall is usually prime time when big schools move across the flats. On lower tides you’ll often see them tailing in shallow water while they dig around for crabs and shrimp.
We also catch plenty of reds along mangrove shorelines and oyster bars. Sliding a bait under a mangrove branch or along a drop-off and watching a redfish crush it never gets old.
Tarpon Season on the Beaches
Captiva is also a great place to chase tarpon during the late spring and early summer migration.
These fish move right along the Gulf beaches, and on calm mornings you can often spot them rolling on the surface from a distance. When we see a school coming, we set up in their path and send a bait out in front of them.
Hooking a tarpon is something every angler should experience at least once. Once they realize they’re hooked, it turns into jumps, tail walks, and long runs that’ll get your heart racing pretty quickly.
Multi-Species Fun All Year Long Fishing In Captiva
Even outside of tarpon season, there’s always something biting around Captiva. Speckled trout are common on the deeper grass flats, especially during the cooler months. Sheepshead and black drum show up around docks and rocky structure and are a great option if you’re looking to bring home a few fish for dinner.
Tripletail are another fun species we run into nearshore around crab traps and floating debris. They can be tricky to spot, but when you do, they’re a blast to catch.
Hopefully This Helps
One of the best things about fishing around Captiva is you get the full Southwest Florida experience all in one trip. You’ve got clear water, wildlife everywhere, and a ton of different species to target depending on the season. Some days we’re quietly drifting the flats looking for redfish, and other days we’re chasing big snook or tarpon along the beaches. That variety is what makes Captiva Island fishing charters so much fun to guide.
At Jackpot Fishing Charters & EcoTours, we fish these waters all the time and build each trip around the tides, conditions, and what you’re hoping to catch.
So if you’re looking for clear water, island scenery, and some seriously fun fishing, Captiva is a great place to do it. Let’s get out there and make it happen.
