Pine Island is one of those places that a lot of people overlook when they’re planning a fishing trip to Southwest Florida, but honestly, it’s one of my favorite areas to fish.
It doesn’t have the busy beach scene like Fort Myers or the big resort vibe of some other islands, but that’s kind of the whole point. Pine Island is quieter, less pressured, and full of fishy water. If you like calm backcountry fishing and exploring mangrove shorelines, this place is hard to beat.
The island sits between Matlacha Pass and Pine Island Sound, and both of those areas are packed with great structure—grass flats, oyster bars, mangroves, little creeks, and hidden cuts where fish love to hang out. And since there’s usually less boat traffic than other nearby spots, the fish tend to be a little less spooky and more willing to bite. That combination makes Pine Island fishing charters a really fun option no matter what time of year you’re visiting.
Redfish on the Pine Island Flats
Redfish are one of the main reasons anglers love fishing around Pine Island.
In the fall especially, we’ll find big schools cruising the shallow flats. On calm mornings you can sometimes see them pushing water or tailing as they root around the bottom looking for crabs and shrimp.
This kind of fishing is a blast because we often get to sight fish them. We’ll ease the boat into position and make a cast ahead of the school with live bait, soft plastics, or even flies if you’re into fly fishing.
When a redfish eats in shallow water, it’s one of the coolest things you’ll see.
Snook Fishing Around the Mangroves
Snook are another big part of what makes Pine Island fishing charters so good.
From spring through early fall, these fish stack up along mangrove shorelines and undercut banks where they wait to ambush baitfish and shrimp. As we work along the shoreline, we’ll pitch baits into the little pockets and shadow lines where snook like to sit.
When they decide to eat, it usually happens fast. Big thumps, quick runs, and a fight that’ll definitely test your drag.
Even during the winter months we can still find them tucked into deeper creeks and warmer channels where they’ll stay active when the water cools down.
Seatrout Fishing in the Grass Flats
When the weather cools off, the grass flats around Pine Island really start to shine for speckled trout.
These fish move into the deeper grass and potholes and can provide some really fun action, especially on popping cork rigs or light jigs. Trout fishing is great for anglers of all skill levels and it’s perfect for families or anyone who just wants steady bites throughout the day.
And the bonus is that plenty of them are keeper-size if you’re hoping to bring home some fresh fish for dinner.
Mangrove Snapper Action
Mangrove snapper are another staple around Pine Island and they bite almost year-round.
We usually target them around oyster bars, dock pilings, and other structure using shrimp or small live baits. They hit surprisingly hard for their size and they’re one of the best-eating fish you can catch in Southwest Florida.
A lot of trips end with a nice mixed bag of snapper, trout, and maybe a redfish or two for the cooler.
A Slower, More Relaxed Style of Fishing
One of the things I really like about fishing Pine Island is the pace. It’s not a place where we’re running all over the map trying to chase fish. Instead, we focus on working the tides, moving through productive areas, and letting the fish come to us. Between the quiet backcountry, the wildlife, and the steady fishing, it makes for a really enjoyable day on the water.
